On this 2-day tour to West Iceland, we’ll take you first to Borgarfjordur, thought to be the location for many of the famous Icelandic Sagas. Deep in the heart of the wild landscapes here, you’ll see the most powerful hot springs in Europe, awe-inspiring waterfalls, and learn about local Viking history. This region is also home to Sturlureykir, a charming geothermal horse farm where Icelandic horses thrive in warm-spring meadows, offering a unique glimpse into rural farm life and traditional Icelandic culture. Then you’ll explore an astonishing lava cave system that was created over a thousand years ago, filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and fascinating ice formations. After an overnight stay in Borgarnes, you’ll then spend your second day discovering the dazzling Snaefellsnes peninsula. Snaefellsnes is also known as “Iceland in Miniature” because the highlights of the country can all be found in this one area. There are glittering glaciers, snow-covered volcanoes, black sand beaches, dramatic mountains, pretty fishing villages, cute seals, seabird colonies, and much more.

After a complimentary pick-up service, we’ll take you to Iceland’s famous Golden Circle, home to some of the country’s most visited natural attractions. Along the way, you’ll experience dramatic rift valleys, powerful waterfalls, bubbling geysers, and colorful volcanic landscapes. Your first stop is Þingvellir National Park, a place of incredible natural, historical, and cultural significance. Here, you can witness the continental plates slowly pulling apart and even stand with one foot in America and the other in Europe, on either side of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Þingvellir is also where Iceland’s first parliament met for nearly a thousand years, as chieftains gathered to make laws, settle disputes, and dispense justice. Next, we’ll visit Geysir, the highlight of the Haukadalur geothermal area. While the original Great Geysir is now mostly dormant, nearby Strokkur erupts every few minutes, sending powerful jets of superheated water high into the air. You’ll smell the sulfur in the air and experience the incredible geothermal energy beneath Iceland’s surface. From Geysir, we’ll make our way to Gullfoss, or the “Golden Falls.” This spectacular two-tiered waterfall is fed by glacial meltwater from Langjökull and plunges approximately 30 meters into a deep canyon. The powerful cascades create plenty of mist and spray, and on sunny days, you may even see brilliant rainbows above the falls. Our final stop of the day is Kerið, a striking volcanic crater known for its vibrant colors. The crater is only a few thousand years old, with its distinctive appearance created by iron deposits in the surrounding rocks. Lush green moss covers the caldera, while a beautiful turquoise lake sits at the bottom, making Kerið one of Iceland’s most memorable natural sights. You’ll then spend the night in Hveragerði, a charming village famous for its geothermal greenhouses and known as the gateway to Iceland’s South Coast. We typically arrive around 4:00 PM, giving you plenty of time to explore and enjoy the town before a relaxing evening. After a good night’s rest, we’ll set out to explore Iceland’s spectacular South Coast. Prepare for breathtaking waterfalls, glacier-covered mountains, dramatic black sand beaches, and picturesque farmlands. During the summer months, you may even spot adorable puffins in their natural habitat. Keep an eye out for Icelandic horses and the country’s impressive volcanoes and snow-capped mountains along the way. Our first stops are the magnificent Seljalandsfoss and Gljúfrabúi waterfalls. Seljalandsfoss drops approximately 60 meters, and when conditions allow, you can even walk behind the waterfall for a truly unique perspective. You’ll also have a chance to admire Eyjafjallajökull, the famous volcano that disrupted air traffic across Europe in 2010. We’ll then continue to Skógafoss, another spectacular 60-meter waterfall. Its name means “Forest Falls,” a reference to the forests that once covered the area before the early Viking settlers cleared them. On sunny days, keep an eye out for beautiful rainbows in the mist. Next, we’ll visit Sólheimajökull, one of Iceland’s most accessible glaciers. Its name translates to “Sun’s Home Glacier,” and you’ll have the opportunity to admire and photograph this incredible frozen landscape. From there, we’ll continue to Dyrhólaey, a dramatic peninsula featuring towering black rock formations and sweeping views of the surrounding black sand beach. During the summer, the area is home to thousands of puffins, making it an excellent place to see these charming seabirds up close. Our final stop is the world-famous Reynisfjara black sand beach. Here, you can experience the power of the Atlantic waves crashing against the striking Reynisdrangar sea stacks and admire the distinctive hexagonal basalt columns along the cliffs. This Short Inca Trail hike is one of our most popular treks as it incorporates many of the highlights of the Classic Inca Trail but is completed in a much shorter time frame! This makes it perfect for explorers who want to experience this world-famous trail and the new 7th wonder of Machu Picchu, but who only have a limited amount of time in the area. This year the Peruvian tourism authorities are making 200 extra permits per day available for this Short Inca Trail. So right now, that means that almost all dates in 2023 and 2024 remain available!
