5 Days
Your adventure commences at Hito Cajón, the border between Bolivia and Chile. Upon arrival, we'll transition to our Bolivian vehicles and complete the necessary migration procedures. Bolivia, a canvas painted by Mother Nature herself, boasts awe-inspiring mountains, multi-hued lakes, extraordinary flora, and diverse fauna, making it a must-visit for seekers of authentic, unique experiences. Embark on an unforgettable journey across the border, surrounded by breathtaking scenery dominated by the majestic Licancabur Volcano.
A highlight of the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve is the Green Lagoon, one of the highest points in our 4x4 expedition. The peculiar beauty of this lagoon is truly unparalleled. En route from the Green Lagoon, we'll encounter the Desert of Dali, the soothing Polques hot springs, Sol de Mañana, and the stark Siloli Desert. Later, we'll pass by the iconic Stone Tree and marvel at the stunning Red Lagoon, home to three of the world's six flamingo species, thriving in this remarkable, harsh environment.
The reserve is also inhabited by pumas, cats, foxes, and a variety of camelids, including vicuñas and llamas. In the afternoon, we'll transfer to our hotel nestled in the heart of the desert, surrounded by nothing but pristine wilderness. In the early morning, after a hearty breakfast, we'll journey through the Andean landscape, where llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas roam freely. Our expedition will take us to discover charming little lagoons, each with its unique colors, shapes, and wildlife. The vibrant hills and arid landscapes provide endless opportunities for photography and moments of awe.
We'll explore the deserts and picturesque little lagoons, including Hedionda, Chiarkota, Honda, and Blanca. Our route will also lead us to Ciudad de Piedra, where we'll witness the fumaroles of Ollague Volcano. We'll bid farewell to the Avaroa National Reserve, passing through small villages like Culpina and San Cristobal, until we reach Uyuni town. From here, we'll follow a paved road to Colchani, a community on the salt flats where salt is processed. As the day unfolds, we'll finally arrive at the surreal Uyuni Salt Flats, with the possibility of witnessing a mesmerizing sunset, weather permitting.
Our morning adventure takes us to the Salt Hills and Ojos de Agua, followed by a visit to the Salt Museum for a fascinating tour. We'll then head to Inka Wasi Island, which resembles a fish from a distance and is located at the heart of the Uyuni salt pan. This unique ecosystem within the salt pan boasts a singular type of flora and rocks that contain fossils of marine algae. As the largest island in the group, it offers an isolated oasis-like landscape against the backdrop of the seemingly endless salt flats, making it a photographer's paradise. Later in the day, we'll relish a magnificent sunset over the tranquil and boundless Uyuni Salt Lake. After dinner, prepare for a magical stargazing experience.
Our journey continues as we depart from the Uyuni Salt Flats, venturing into the desert region. Along the way, we'll pass through the Galaxias of Awakisa, where you'll witness spectacular rock formations. Our destination is San Pedro de Quemez, where we'll spend the night at the Hotel de Piedra. An early wake-up call offers a chance to observe the Milky Way and catch a breathtaking sunrise, weather permitting. Afterward, we'll leave from Uyuni, making our way to the Avaroa border in the Bolivian desert. Along the route, you'll have the opportunity to admire the small, colorful lagoons, most of which preserve the rich biodiversity of the Andes. Upon reaching the
border, we'll change vehicles to continue our journey in Chilean territory. After nearly four hours, we'll arrive in Calama, where you'll be transferred to the airport.
